It’s so important to decorate your home with intention on on budget.

I guess with the quarantine (this was written in early April 2020), it gives us time to really think and finish the projects we wanted.

In this blog post, I will share with you how you can decorate your home on a tight budget. This is a process that can be easily followed though it will take some time. If you don’t know, I am really into slow decorating.

What does that even mean?

It means taking the time to really evaluate the space in the home before decorating or filling it with stuff. I don’t want you to waste your money by just filling your space just because you can. I want to encourage you to think about what you have and the purpose of each space.

Then, you can make intentional decisions about buying furniture and accessories for that space.

Before we continue, here is a list of home projects we’ve worked on:

  1. Minimalist Front Entry for under $40 (this has been updated, but I haven’t written about it yet)
  2. Cheap Bathroom Decor: Display Box Shelves
  3. How To Organize A Craft Closet
  4. Guest Bedroom Wall Decor on a Budget
  5. Tips on Decorating Your Home on a Tight Budget (this post)

Here is one process on how to decorate your home on a tight budget:

1. Declutter your home

Before you go and decorate any space in your home, declutter and clean your home. I’ve written this post on 10 Easy Ways to Declutter Your Home.

Why is it important to declutter your home?

One of the big reasons for this purpose is to find out what you actually have. You can not only get rid or donate items that you don’t use or like anymore, and find things that you can use in ‘x’ room.

Sometimes, cleaning up our space will allow us to have that breathing room space and also find treasures that we forgot we had.

“I was looking for this!”

Does that sound familiar? No, just me? Okay.

It get pretty exciting to have a space cleaned out and then start working on decorating. Get to work and declutter (I’m cheering for you on the side).

Start with one space and then move on the next. If you can’t declutter the whole house, that’s okay. I take one space at a time. Do what works for you.

2. Choose one space to focus on and plan

It is so easy to want to do everything at once. The problem is, you won’t get it all done.

Pick one space and focus on it before moving on to the next space.

It can be very distracting to think about everything and not get any work done at all. I’m speaking from experience.

When I think about my home and the projects I want to do, it is so easy to make list of what I want to do in each space. However, it’s only items I want to get but not truly understanding what I want the space to be.

Of course, you can have a color palette or style for your home, but when you’re working on it, choose one space at a time.

You can use my free template to help you plan for your space.

However, if you want to start on a different space while waiting for an item to finish up your current space, go ahead. With our current situation, it takes a while for the items to ship to us. I bought this curtain rod for my daughter’s room and it took a few weeks to come. So, I work on another space while waiting.

3. Use what you have

Do this before you go shopping or research for items.

Shop your own home.

While planning for your space, think about what you already have. Use the items that you found while decluttering and see if that fits this particular space you’re working on.

If the picture frame or a dresser doesn’t match the room, paint it. Give it a makeover to fit your space (if that is what you want to do).

The most efficient way to decorate on a budget is to use what you already have.

4. Research online on the best deals and then in-person (if you are able to)

Do your research online. Check different stores and stores that you don’t usually shop at.

See if they offer free shipping or coupons if you sign up for their emails.

You can sign up for Amazon Prime free for 30 days. We have Amazon Prime and it’s been pretty useful, especially if you are also part of Amazon Family. We were able to save on a number of baby items. Click on the box below to learn more.

Check the measurements, color, and reviews to make sure that it is what you are looking for. I especially like to look at the pictures provided by the people who do these reviews. It will give me a chance to see it in a real person’s home (and not staged).

If you prefer to see these items in person, you might need to wait until the stores are open again before checking them out.

This process takes time and you need to feel comfortable about your purchase. So do some research online first before making any purchases.

5. Do some DIYs

I love a good DIY. You may or may not know this about me, but I really like it.

Some of the projects I worked on include:

  • Bulletin Board DIY with Linen
  • DIY Mickey Ears Cap: Avengers Inspired
  • Easy DIY Clothing Organization Label

If you are up for a DIY project, see what you can do to save money in decorating your homes.

When I am looking to save money on home accessories, I look up “dollar store hacks” on Pinterest. It has so many ideas on how to use dollar store items and changing them to look more high end (like Pottery Barn).

The Dollar Tree is a great place to check out. You can order online and get the items delivered to you.

Do it yourself projects will help you save a lot of money if you have the time and creativity to do it.

6. Rearrange furniture until it works for you

Looking at your space, you want to rearrange furniture around to see what works best for you. You don’t have to put everything against the wall.

Try to utilize the space in a way that you and your family will use.

By rearranging furniture, you will know if something is too big in the space and maybe you’ll need to swap it for something else.

You do not need to have it right the first time. Change it up until it’s exactly what you want.

7. Let your space rest and reevaluate after some time

I learned this tip from a Myquillyn Smith, author of Cozy Minimalist Home: More Style, Less stuff.

She said to let your space rest. I think she said to do this before you start putting stuff into your space, but I believe that you can do this after as well.

Evaluate your space after some time to see if it’s still the way that you like it.

Sometimes, we like something at the moment but there might be something that you want to change in a week’s time. That is perfectly okay.

8. Move onto the next space

Once you are happy with your space, you can move onto your next space and start this whole process again.

Here are some other home decorating projects:

  1. Minimalist Front Entry for under $40 (this has been updated since, but I haven’t written about it yet)
  2. Cheap Bathroom Decor: Display Box Shelves
  3. How To Organize A Craft Closet
  4. Guest Bedroom Wall Decor on a Budget
